Free Wheeling
Melissa KimI am not a bike racer. I am not a gear head. I just like to bike, and my two wheels have taken me to many corners of the globe. I am the author of a guidebook, "New England Biking: 100 of the Best Road and Trail Rides," and I write a bicycling column for the Maine Sunday Telegram.

Chebeague Island

At long last I took my bike out to Chebeague Island, one of the few Casco Bay islands I had not yet explored either by bike or boat. I thought I'd share some photos from this recent bicycling trip around the lovely island. Also, there's something I didn't mention in my Sunday (Aug. 5) column.

I've read a lot about Chebeague Island's beloved Bicycle Man, Mac Passano. Among other things, he collects old bikes and fixes them up as a hobby. He has dozens out in his yard, available for people to borrow to explore the island, all for free and more or less on the honor system. There are no bike rental places on Chebeague, so if you need a bike, people will direct you to Mac. His place is on South Road.

However, I have to say that on the day I was there, I did not see any bikes out, and I was unable to reach Passano by phone. The helpful folks at Sunset Inn B&B told me he still does the bike lending. I could not confirm anything before deadline, so if anyone has more information than I do, please share!

I read your article in today's Sunday Telegram and it was very good. I'm glad you enjoyed our Island. I must comment though on the legend for the next to last picture above. It should say INDIAN POINT BEACH, not Island Point Beach.

Oops! Thanks for the note; I corrected the photo caption. It sure is a great spot!

I also wanted to add something that a reader pointed out, also about Indian Point Beach. When I went, it was low tide and looked safe for little kids. But at incoming and high tide, the sand bar here creates a very strong and potentially dangerous undertow and current, and it's not safe for anyone to swim here. So check the tides and apply common sense when visiting.
