Chebeague Island
At long last I took my bike out to Chebeague Island, one of the few Casco Bay islands I had not yet explored either by bike or boat. I thought I'd share some photos from this recent bicycling trip around the lovely island. Also, there's something I didn't mention in my Sunday (Aug. 5) column.
I've read a lot about Chebeague Island's beloved Bicycle Man, Mac Passano. Among other things, he collects old bikes and fixes them up as a hobby. He has dozens out in his yard, available for people to borrow to explore the island, all for free and more or less on the honor system. There are no bike rental places on Chebeague, so if you need a bike, people will direct you to Mac. His place is on South Road.
However, I have to say that on the day I was there, I did not see any bikes out, and I was unable to reach Passano by phone. The helpful folks at Sunset Inn B&B told me he still does the bike lending. I could not confirm anything before deadline, so if anyone has more information than I do, please share!

I also wanted to add something that a reader pointed out, also about Indian Point Beach. When I went, it was low tide and looked safe for little kids. But at incoming and high tide, the sand bar here creates a very strong and potentially dangerous undertow and current, and it's not safe for anyone to swim here. So check the tides and apply common sense when visiting.
