Free Wheeling
Melissa KimI am not a bike racer. I am not a gear head. I just like to bike, and my two wheels have taken me to many corners of the globe. I am the author of a guidebook, "New England Biking: 100 of the Best Road and Trail Rides," and I write a bicycling column for the Maine Sunday Telegram.

12 Hours of Bradbury

For Maine's first 12 hour mountain bike relay race, to be held on Saturday, Sept. 22 at Bradbury Mountain State Park, teams in all categories will be doing laps around the eastern trails from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The event also features food vendors, a kids race and special events throughout the day.

According to race director Pat Hackleman, “the race is modeled after other 12 hour mountain bike relay races around the country. The course is an all ability levels course. You don't have to be an expert racer to enter a four or more person team.” Proceeds from this event will benefit the Friends of Bradbury, a newly formed non-profit providing trail construction, maintenance and awareness throughout the park.

This Sunday at Bradbury

Spoiled for choice: a road ride, a hike or a mountain bike ride? MaineShare’s 16th annual benefit on Sunday, September 9, includes three road rides (25K, 50K, 100K), two hikes up the mountain (3K and 8K) and one mountain bike ride. The Bicycle Coalition of Maine’s Pete Phair will lead a mountain bike ride on the trails; it will be geared to the level of the group on the day and explore the trails on the eastern side of the park. The 100K road ride will be lead by Jeff Miller, Executive Director of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine. The 50K ride will be lead by cyclist and mountaineer Bill Yeo. Rides have sag wagons and rest stops. There’s also a buffet lunch and live music. The proceeds support MaineShare, a community of non-profits funded through workplace giving. There is a minimum pledge of $60. For a complete schedule and more information visit www.maineshare.org
