Great bird feeding tips

Yesterday's story about bird feeders offered some great tips about using backyard bird feeders. Although we have several bird houses (and bat boxes) in our backyard, we don't always maintain feeders during the winter. It seems the kids like the painting and decorating of the bird houses more than keeping feeders stocked with food every week.

Ooh! PLease be very careful about this! If you keep feeders regularly stocked leading into winter then birds will come to depend on these feeders, if you stop stocking the feeders in winter some birds may actually die because they have gotten used to where this feeder is located and in inclement weather may not be able to find new feeders to live off of! This probably doesn't happen if you aren't consistent about keeping them stocked year round, but just a word of warning.

PS-I enjoy your column very much!

Thanks for the warning Kristin. I guess we're doing things right after all :-)
