Greater Portland

Falmouth Family Ice Center
20 Hat Trick Dr., Falmouth
Hours: The outdoor rink is open 9 a.m. -9 p.m. daily, weather permitting. The indoor rink has varying public skate hours. See the Web site for the schedule.
What else: The Falmouth Family Ice Center offers an outdoor and indoor rink. The outdoor rink is 400 by 100 feet in size and is assured a smooth surface with the help of a Zamboni. It holds a about 200 people, according to the center. With a warming house, picnic tables and restrooms, this outdoor rink offers nearly all the comforts of an indoor ice skating center. $5 admission. Kids 5 and under skate free. Skate rentals are $2.

State Street and Park Avenue; Payson Park, Baxter Boulevard; Breakwater School, Capisic Street; and Deering High School, Ludlow Street.
Hours: 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily through February
What else: The City of Portland maintains all its outdoor ice skating rinks using a power broom and regular flooding. None of the public rinks offers skate rentals. All have ample parking.Three-and-a-half acre Deering Oaks Park Pond does have lighting and a warming hut, but the hut is not in use this season. Payson Park is small and has limited lighting. The small rink at Deering High School has a warming hut. Skating is free.

Mill Creek Pond
Corner of Hinckley and Ocean streets
Hours: Weather dependent
What else: The pond, which is the centerpiece of Mill Creek Park, is shaped in a perfect figure eight, with a pretty wooden bridge dividing the two sections. Usually a hockey game or two takes place in one circle while families and individual skaters take up the other circle. There's a nice three-sided warming hut, with a bench and lots of space to store boots and mittens and such. There's usually plenty of parking on the streets around the park. And because the pond is in a park, if skating gets boring there's always the rest of the park to explore.

• Windham

Manchester School
Behind North Windham Union Church on Roosevelt Trail (Route 302)
Hours: 3 p.m.- 9 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. weekends
What else: Volunteers maintain this man-made rink, which measures 200 feet by 85 feet, and conditions are usually good, weather-permitting. The rink is lit at night and parking is available behind the church. Skating is free.

• Westbrook

Public ice rinks at Stroudwater Street
East Bridge Street, and Lincoln Street
Hours: Weather permitting
What else: The City of Westbrook maintains three public ice rinks with brooming and flooding. The rink on Stroudwater Street is about an acre and has a warming hut that is open from 2-6 p.m. The rink is lit by streetlights only. The Lincoln Street rink has lights. Both the Lincoln Street and the East Bridge Street rinks are small. Skating is free.

• Yarmouth

Yarmouth Community Services Park
Main Street, just under the Route 1 overpass
Hours: Weather permitting
What else: With timed lights that come on at 5:30 p.m. and stay on until 10:30 p.m., it attracts adult hockey players who stop there after work as well as kids. The "L" shaped rink generally attracts hockey players to the back section and figure skaters to the front. It holds a few hundred skaters. There are no rentals and no bathroom facilities here.

• Scarborough

Massacre Pond at Scarborough Beach State Park

Hours: Weather permitting
What else: The freshwater pond is nearly a quarter of a mile long, located in a marshy area behind the beach. The shallow pond usually freezes nicely, and the ocean breezes help blow snow off of the ice.On a good day, you can skate from the parking area at the state park all the way to the other end of the pond. From there, if you want, you can walk up a small hill on your skates and see the ocean. There are no benches or warming huts, so people often bring folding chairs or something else to sit on while lacing skates.

What else: The parks department floods this park in the winter to create a cozy neighborhood skating rink. It is open all day, but the warming hut is staffed from 3 to 9 p.m. weekdays and noon to 9 p.m. on weekends. The surface is groomed as needed.

• Bridgton

The Bridgton Ice Arena
The Bridgton Ice Arena is on the campus of Bridgton Academy, off Route 37.
Hours: Hours vary from week to week but in general are Fridays, 7:30-9:30 p.m.; Saturdays, 1:30-3:30 p.m.; and Sundays, 1-3:30 p.m. Fees are $4 for adults, $3 for students and seniors, and $2 for children younger than 6.
What else: Rental skates and skate sharpening are available.

• Carrabassett Valley

Ice skating rink at the Outdoor Center
Sugarloaf USA, 5092 Sugarloaf Access Road, Carrabassett Valley
Hours: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
What else: Cost is $5, $4 for children under age 12, free for children under age five. The outdoor ice skating rink at the Outdoor Center at Sugarloaf is just under Olypmic-size. A smooth surface is maintained by Zamboni. The rink has no warming hut but does have a lodge nearby with a wooden walkway connecting the lodge to the rink. The rink has both music and lights. On Tuesday and Thursday nights, the rink is set aside for informal hockey games. Games for kids begin at 5:30 p.m. and games for adults begin at 7 p.m.Skate rentals are available. Skates are $5 for adults, $4 for children under age 12, free for children under age 5.
