Winter Is Coming!

It's time to wax the boat, put the rods away and grease the reels. A sad time of year, yes indeed.

I go ice fishing on occasion, but my passion is open water fishing. There are still a few fishing possibilities after November 30th for open water fishermen. The Saco River is now open year round to the taking of one Brown Trout per day. Sounds pretty liberal for a catch and release fisherman like me!

I've lived on the Saco River my whole life, and as with any river, its water flows seem to be challenging; but some nice fish are available if you fish it consistently.

I did meet one fisherman this summer that was having good luck jigging for browns above Skelton Dam, but I never caught up with him to see if his technique provided consistent results.

Fly-fishers seem to be hitting the area of Sebago Lake which is still open to them. I would appreciate any photos of fish from people fishing the area designated by red markers at Sebago Lake Station and advice on what’s giving them the most luck.

I'm going to be reviewing fishing techniques, gear and rigs in the coming months. I'll attempt to help any of you out there that could use clarifications on definitions and techniques. Things like: what's a jig and pig or a wet fly and how do you sew on a dead smelt?

If you find the post interesting, don't forget you can subscribe and be notified of new postings. Let's enjoy these next few month's, gear up and be ready for spring!

And yes, I do own an ice auger, so when the ice is thick enough, you'll here from me on that.

Safe fishing is fun fishing! So let's not get on those lakes before the ice is thick enough. The warden's have better things to do than pull your body out of the water.

Here are a few traps used for ice fishing.
