Maine Atlantic Salmon Fishing Season?

That's right! Today, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife in conjunction with the Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission has open parts of the Penobscot River to Atlantic Salmon fishing. The season is a test which may not be renewed next year.

Fishing regulations and links for licences are available form the Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission. I purchased my license on Wednesday and urge anyone interested in restoring the fishery to do so. The license fees will be used exclusively to manage the fishery. If you did not purchase your fishing license on line, check my previous post for details.

If you are not familiar with Atlantic Salmon fishing, this article written by John Holyoke is fascinating and gives you a peak as to what to expect if you hit the water. There is an etiquette to the fishing. I assume because most of the fish are caught from a limited number of pools, certain ways have been devised to give all a fair chance.

Remember, be safe and also be careful not to destroy stream bed structure!
