What do you think of a 50 MPH posted speed limit for all of Maine's inland waters?

Here's an idea. Why don't we just create an across the board top speed for all of Maine's inland waters. I say it should be 50 MPH. Sorry bass boaters, this would mean you would have to slow down too!

While watching the antics of Pro Bass Fishermen on ESPN last year, I realized that all people can act uncivilized when put under pressure or when feeling the need for speed. Let's cut the crap and talk safety; I feel 50 MPH is a fast enough speed for 99% of the people on the water.

What do you think?

I know I don't go fifty in my canoe! Maybe 5 mph would be better.

I don't know, but I always get some jack---, that thinks he needs to zoom around my little green 11 foot bass boat on Thomas pond.He usually is trailing a raft with kids on it, has a whole lake to play with, but feels it nescessary to stay right where someone is trying to enjoy some solitude. He knows who he is because he is the only one that is out in this cove. Please if you read this use better common sense.

I guess it's time to place buoys and establish sea lanes for big boats on Sebago and Long Lakes. We'll have to pay for it all with massive taxes. Mainers will have to pay it when registering for a "Lakes Permit", and out-of-staters will have to get theirs at stores selling hunting and fishing licenses.

It's too bad, but the congestion in the last couple of years on Sebago Lake has been getting so bad lately that a tragedy was just waiting to happen.

You simply CANNOT have multi-ton ocean-going race boats on a lake along with 8,000 other boaters ranging from inner-tubes and canoes to pontoon boats and swimmers without someone getting killed.

Look at the yahoo factor that has already ruined the once beautiful Saco River. It's a disgrace, and people are starting to get hurt.

Establishing a speed limit is only part of the solution. We also need to support legislation that bans high-powered offshore racing boats from ALL inland waterways. In addition, a "headway speed only" law should be established during the hours between sunset and sunrise--the hours that running lights are required, according to Maine boating law.

I would pay a higher tax- I'll call it "the middle finger" tax because I am using it alot as a warning to keep speed boaters who don't respect the right of way. The boater who is at anchor holding a fiahing pole is not an invitation to zoom by real close with a whole rest of the lake to work with. There are other ways to make a point that I have not used yet.
