Sebago Lake Anglers Association
The time has come for the Sebago Lake Anglers Association's January meeting. This great bunch of anglers will be meeting Tuesday, January 8, at the Naples Town Hall. The meeting begins at 7:00PM and the weather is looking good if you have to drive. Last month's meeting took place in the middle of a snow storm, but I managed to attend anyway.
This month's meeting is open to all and will feature Francis Brautighham, Regional Biologist for The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. This month's meeting is also sure to be interesting. Mr. Brautigham will be explaining proposed fishing rule changes for 2008. He is interested in getting your input on DIFW's future fishing direction.
Other topics that will be addressed at the meeting include the current status of Northern Pike in Sebago Lake and free fish passage on the Crooked River. If you have the time to stop in, I'm sure you will enjoy meeting this active bunch of anglers.

I'm not an expert on Great Pond, but I do have a few questions. What area of Great are you fishing? What is the depth? What type of rigging and bait are you using when ice fishing for Pike? Do you frequent Log Cabin Bait Shop in Oakland? They are always full of good information concerning angling activity. Here is a PFD link to the Maine IFW Northern Pike Management Report:
http://www.maine.gov/ifw/fishing/species/management_plans/northernpike.pdf
Also, you can always fish around unoccupied shacks. Pike will use the shadow provided by the shack to ambush prey. Remember that pike are stalkers. They love to hang in areas that are adjacent to some kind of cover. Channel markers and large rocks or weed beds are a good hunch. Steep shelfs with boulders for them to hang against are also good.
If you want to try spearing, which I believe is still legal in Maine (check the regs), set up an ice shack that has no floor and is dark inside. Then cut a large race hole into the ice with a chain saw. Let the shack rest for a few days. Pike will move in and use the shadow as cover. When you start fishing it, use a sucker to entice the Pike. When the sucker stops moving and hangs perfectly still, ready your spear because the Pike is about to hit. Remember to design the shack so that is as dark as possible. You will be able to see them better than they can see you. When you remove the shack, place bows on the ice to warn people of the large hole below.
Have Fun Ice Fishing!
