As northbound through-hikers on the Appalachian Trail exit New Hampshire, they cross nine 3,000-foot summits in their first 20 Maine miles.

The twin summits of Baldpate Mountain — 3,662 and 3,780 feet — are the last of the group. With expanses of windswept open rock ledges plus an unusual alpine bog with a variety of rare plants, Baldpate ranks among western Maine's tip-top experiences.

Devote a full day to this strenuous adventure. Start at Grafton Notch State Park and tramp north on an up-and-return route following the Appalachian Trail. The west summit is partially forested with a fine northeasterly overlook. Drop steeply to the saddle between the two peaks, cross the bog on a plank bridge, then sharply ascend the south face of the open east summit.
