As northbound through-hikers on the Appalachian Trail exit New Hampshire, they cross nine 3,000-foot summits in their first 20 Maine miles. The twin summits of Baldpate Mountain 3,662 and 3,780 feet are the last of the group. With expanses of windswept open rock ledges plus an unusual alpine bog with a variety of rare plants, Baldpate ranks among western Maine's tip-top experiences. Devote a full day to this strenuous adventure. Start at Grafton Notch State Park and tramp north on an up-and-return route following the Appalachian Trail. The west summit is partially forested with a fine northeasterly overlook. Drop steeply to the saddle between the two peaks, cross the bog on a plank bridge, then sharply ascend the south face of the open east summit.
