The four peaks of the Bemis Range provide miles of good hiking and excellent views. From 3,592 foot high Bemis Mountain, you'll look out over the vast blue waters of Mooselookmeguntic Lake and the alpine slopes of Saddleback Mountain. This 14-mile loop hike is moderately strenuous. Follow the Bemis Valley Trail upstream for six miles to the intersection with the A.T. Turn east for another mile to Bemis Mountain Lean-to and camp. The next day take the A.T. for seven miles over the four peaks of Bemis and absorb the solitude of a fine mountain walk. The trailhead is on Route 17, about 25 miles north of Mexico. You'll emerge from the woods just a half-mile north at the A.T. crossing at the Height of Land. Carey Kish of Portland is the former president of the Maine Outdoor Adventure Club.
