Exodus Last Night
Birds were definitely on the move early last night. I heard plenty of calls when I listened at around 9:30pm. Check out the 10:00 radar image:

Definitely birds in the air. But, by midnight, there wasn’t too much – and the rain was approaching.

With the rain nearing by 2:00am, very few birds were on the move.

By 5:00am, there was nothing but rain. Although there would not be any way to “see” birds through this precipitation, it’s safe to say very little is migrating during inclement weather such as this. In other words, birds left the area last night ahead of the storm, but very little arrived.

While wet weather may not produce a good songbird flight, it can produce other excellent birding opportunities. Since our store’s Saturday Morning Birdwalks go rain or shine, folks are learning to grab the Gore-tex and come on out for some great birding opportunities. The 8 hardy souls that made it this morning were treated to 4 American Golden-Plovers on the plowed fields along Mayhall Rd in Gray (a complete summary of our birdwalk, as always, is on our store’s website– we mornings are the perfect conditions for looking around at plowed fields, sod farms, etc.
With the front passing through the area this afternoon, and skies predicted to clear tonight, tomorrow (Sunday) morning may just be a heck of a day . . . Stay tuned!
