Carey Kish's Ski Guide to Sugarloaf

The Facts

Vertical: 2820 ft Location: 5092 Access Road; Carrabassett Valley, ME, 04947 Get their deals: (800) THE LOAF; sugarloaf.com Trailmap
The ski-nny: The biggest big mountain skiing in Maine with 2,800 feet of vertical and plenty of terrain to suit all abilities. ASC is out and Boyne is in. And so is increased snowmaking capacity and grooming ability. Bullwinkle's on the mountain will double in size. And a new bus system will help you get around. Steeps: Narrow Gauge top to bottom is always a fun run. Suck it up and take the plunge down Crib Works for added spice. Take flight down Upper Gondola for some heart-pumping excitement. Cruisers: Tote Road is still the best cruising run in the state. Watch out for Chicken Pitch! Easy going: Wide-open Whiffletree is a green crowd pleaser for sure. Apres-ski: The Bag & Kettle in the village base area serves up an awesome bowl of chili and makes their own brew. The Rack on the access road is the place to rub elbows with gold medal winners. Get a-quaint-ed with the locals at Longfellow's in Kingfield. Extra credit: Ride the Timberline chair to the top of the mountain (great for sunsets and a long last run of the day) and add some serious verticalÑand sceneryÑto your ski day. Shhh!: On Maine Day every Wednesday Maine residents can ski and ride for only $26. Now that's worth skipping out on work!

UP at the loaf this weekend...... Missed the G love concert, but saw this band Gristle Stick instead. Great music, plus they had the alltime great keyboardist Jim Austin. I volunteered with Maine Handicapped Skiing on Saturday. The riding conditions were so great. I am guessing the got 4" the night before. It made it realy easy for my handicapped student to have fun! There wasnt much in the way for lift lines. The sun was shining and the wind was down.
Sunday.. Decided to use my voucher I get from Volenteering to Ride again.. 4" of Champaign powder floats on top of the already amazing conditions. It was a bit more crowded Sunday due to the lack of blackout days on Bronze season pass holders (blackout on Saturdays) Windier too. It was a cold crisp typical Sugarloaf day! Heard the G love concert was good.

Well yesterday we was at Sunday River. Quite a day. Spent the night up here at the Loaf. MOrning comes. brrrrrrr. I knew it... Its always cold and windy up here at the loaf. NO thang though. My buddy was wicked excited. He was braggin bout the loaf all last night. I do enjoy it, I'd tel him. But that wasnt enough."Why waste your time at Sunday Rivah then". he'd reply. Any way the snow was well groomed. Fresh cord!!! Not a bad thing at all. Both of us Ride Burton boards, and we made figure eights under the lifts.... Did yah see any of em? Perfect. Lift lines for a long weekand were minimal. To put it short we had to ride again the next day. But where?

I went to Sugarloaf Monday, the 21st. It was so windy (AND COLD!) that only a few lifts were running (neither of the Super Quads). Thankfully, I was able to get a pass for another day.
