First of the year reports this week included great egret, snowy egret, broad-winged hawk, American coot, piping plover, and Wilson's snipe.

First of the year reports this week included GREAT EGRET, SNOWY EGRET, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, AMERICAN COOT, PIPING PLOVER, and WILSON'S SNIPE.

Other noteworthy birds were NORTHERN SHOVELER, REDHEAD, CANVASBACK, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, and HOARY REDPOLL.

BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS are on the move in southern Maine. Dabbling duck diversity remains high. A few NORTHERN SHRIKES are still around. Many reports of AMERICAN KESTRELS, AMERICAN WOODCOCKS, EASTERN PHOEBES and FOX SPARROWS were received this week.

York County

An AMERICAN COOT was on Mill Pond, off Lindsey Road in York Village, on March 29.

A single TREE SWALLOW flew by at Parsons Beach in York on April 2.

A PIPING PLOVER was seen on Laudholm Beach in Wells on April 1.

Four PIPING PLOVERS were at Goose Rocks Beach on March 30.

Two RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS and a NORTHERN GOSHAWK were at the Grondin sand pit on Holmes Road in Saco on March 29.

TREE SWALLOWS over the marsh and an OSPREY in Wells Harbor were noted on April 3.

Scarborough Marsh

The first GREAT EGRET arrived on March 30 with 15 seen on April 1.

Six SNOWY EGRETS arrived on April 1.

Forty SNOW GEESE were seen near the Scarborough Marsh Nature Center on April 1.

Two drake NORTHERN SHOVELERS were seen behind the Pelreco building on April 3.

A single RUSTY BLACKBIRD was seen at Dunstan Landing on March 31 and two at Seavey's Landing on April 3.

A light morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen on March 30 and a dark morph on April 3.

Greater Portland

Two PIPING PLOVERS arrived on Western Beach in Scarborough on April 1.

A flock of 50+ SNOW GEESE was seen in flight from Spurwink Marsh in Cape Elizabeth on March 30.

A flock of 120 HORNED LARKS with 20 SNOW BUNTINGS was seen March 30 in the strawberry fields on Two Lights Road in Cape Elizabeth.

The Bradbury Mountain Hawkwatch recorded the first two BROAD-WINGED HAWKS of the year on April 3.

Midcoast

FISH CROWS were heard in the pines on Cleveland Street, near Federal, in Brunswick on March 27.

Four RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were visiting feeders in Topsham on March 28.

A flock of 100+ SNOW GEESE was in Merrymeeting Bay in Bowdoinham on April 1.

An OSPREY was seen April 2 at Winnegance in Bath.

Two WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were spotted on Hermit Island in Phippsburg on March 30.

Two DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS were in Salt Bay in Phippsburg on March 30.

On April 1, a SAVANNAH SPARROW visited feeders in Georgetown.

Three WILSON'S SNIPE were spotted at Green Point Farm Wildlife Management Area on April 1.

A SNOW GOOSE was in Weskeag Marsh in South Thomaston on March 29.

Among the species arriving on Monhegan this past week were EASTERN PHOEBE, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, NORTHERN FLICKER, and SONG and FOX SPARROW.

Kennebec Valley (Augusta-Waterville)

A first-winter ICELAND GULL was seen April 1 in Augusta.

A HOARY REDPOLL, among 100+ COMMON REDPOLLS, is still occasionally visiting a feeding station in Clinton as recently as April 3.

Thirty plus SNOW GEESE were with 300+ Canada Geese along River Road in Clinton on April 3.

Central - Bangor

A single TREE SWALLOW was seen near Chapin Park in Bangor.

A male CANVASBACK was at Maine Audubon's Fields Pond Nature Center in Holden on March 31.

A male HOARY REDPOLL visited feeders in Hudson on March 30.

A WILSON'S SNIPE and a MERLIN were seen in the Orrington marsh on March 31.

A “big” flock of EVENING GROSBEAKS was reported at a feeding station in Plymouth on April 3.

Penobscot Bay

A drake and two hen REDHEADS were photographed at Lincolnville Beach on April 1.

A BLACK VULTURE was spotted flying over Green's Island.

A BOREAL CHICKADEE was photographed on Vinalhaven Island on April 1 in Basin Woods.

The GREAT GRAY OWL reported last week was last seen on Deer Isle on March 27.

Fifty-four HARLEQUIN DUCKS were seen off Brimstone Island on March 25.

Two GREAT CORMORANTS were seen on nests on Little Roberts Island on March 25.

Downeast

Returning to Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge were AMERICAN WOODCOCKS on March 22, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS on March 27, and WOOD DUCK on April 1.

Two TURKEY VULTURES made it as far as Baring by March 30.

Northern Maine- Aroostook

Arrivals in Caribou this past week included HERRING GULLS on March 29, FOX SPARROWS on March 31, and BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS on April 2.
