Mountain lion sighting
Well, I'll be! My friend Dan just reported seeing a mountain lion this Saturday near the Maine-NH border.
Dan said: "Yep. Today on Province Pond Trail in Chatham, N.H. He/she was crossing the trail about 5 minutes behind us just as we arrived at the car and changed our boots. I guess he/she weighed around 100 lbs., was about five or six feet long, brown with a long tail. Crossed the trail, then leaped over some small trees gracefully into the bushes."
There are reportedly as many as 100 mountain lions roaming around the wilds of Maine.
Have you ever seen one?
There is probably more than 100 mountain lions now, since my son in law had a mother with young ones cross in front of his truck one evening at the base of Mt Abram, ME

A friend of mine had been hunting in northern maine above moosehead and spotted a mountain Lion. He's been hunting for 40 to 50 years and knows what he was talking about.I suspect the giant forest fire a few years back in Canada pushed many animals out of their natural habitat and into Maine and NH.

My family and I were hiking on Monument Hill in Leeds Maine this past Sunday (August 7). My 14 year old daughter was leading and she saw a mountain lion sharpening his/her claws on a tree on the trail. We were on the backside of the mountain, where the snowmobile trail is. The cat hunkered down like it was going to pounce, my daughter back up and yelled for her father. My husband looked up just as the cat ran off into the woods.

I spotted a mountain lion on I95 Labor Day weekend around mile Marker 252. (Mt. Katadin scenic view) A man had once told me he saw one while deer hunting. I thought he was crazy. I thought wrong.

I live in military housing in Brunswick, ME. I have a mountain lion in the woods behind my house. Our housing managers are reluctant to deal with the issue. We all have small children and can sometimes catch the cat watching us. It will run if the adults approach it, but our children are not safe. I currently have a motion sensative camera in my back yard. Hopefully we will catch something.

I live in freeport on the lower flying pt. rd. One morning I was going to work around 4.30 am on the intersection of lower flying rd. and flying pt rd. Isaw what I thought was a deer crossing in front of my truck hid lights. One big problem it was a big cat with avery long tail. Icalled the maine warden service in Gray Me but they never returned my call. I was schocked at what I saw. Iam a deer hunter and have seen all kinds of wildlife but but never anything like this. I will never forget what I saw that morning.

My aunt in Hartford, ME said she saw a mountain lion about 3 weeks ago. She just happened to look our her window and it was walking along the rock wall in front of her house. She described it as a big cat, with a long tail, and about 3 feet tall at the shoulder. She knew it wasn't looking at a bobcat.

My mother and I saw what appeared to be a young mountain lion walk across her yard in Sanford, ME in August 2005. It stood about 2 feet tall, had a long tail that dipped to the ground, and was tan in color. My mother saw it closer than I did and said it had faint rings on the tail. It pounced into the woods when a car approached.

while deer hunting in Poland, ME I heard what sounded like a person except it was moving fast. The animal ran to my right and then circled behind me I turned to see a large tan animal on a dead run at first thinking there's my deer I was shocked to see that the animal was low to the ground with a long tail and a very stalky cat like appearance. There is no doubt in my mind that this was a Mountain Lion. It was to big and stealthy to be a dog. After the animal left my area two hunters walked from the direction he had come. These two hunters spooked a mountain lion and it ran right by me.

About a week ago my family and I were driving to our home in the Parkman area (Rt 150 S on the Harlow Pond Rd) and it was early evening, sun setting but not down and SOMETHING ran in front of us. We all saw it, myself, my son, my fiance and my daughter. It was tan in color, low to the ground with a tail, no spots (not a Bobcat or Lynx) and muscular. It LOPED across the road and we all just watched, open-mouthed. It was a BIG cat and we couldn't believe what we had just seen. A few days later I was talking to a co-worker about it and he said "Oh yes, a Mountain Lion but according the the wardens, we don't have those in Maine." He then told me that that cat has been seen in and around Parkman/Guilford several times over the year and that he saw one many years ago in Ripley. They are here!

About 15 years ago my kids and I were at a play ground in Bowdoinham. I saw at first what I thought was a deer walking along the edge of the wo ods about 50 yards away. I yelled to the kids to look and then I said never mind it must be a dog. I then as it walk I thought no way its not a dog its a lion. After 20 seconds or so it walked ito the woods. I rubbed my eyes and said I must be nuts. I had never heard the rumors of mountain lions in maine. About a min latter the mountain lion came back out of the woods and walked along the edge of the woods for 30 or 40 yards and then disapeared. I gathered up the kids and headed for home. I called the police and asked if there was a circus in the area and if they were missing a lion. The dispatcher wasn't suprised and said he had been traking one in the area.

I reside in this state with my wife and two children.I am a native of this state and an avid outdoorsman. That being said, my report of a mountain lion sighting, should hold a wink more validity than some over anxious flatlander that's afraid of the forest.Last August 2006,my family and I were driving in to our camp in the New Vineyard mountains. My wife and I clearly saw a mountain lion wander across the trail in front of us, no more than 50 yards up ahead. Not something you see everyday, fore sure.Perhaps if more people are willing to report their random sightings, the state may be more apt to admit their existence here in the state.....

Found this page after I saw a mountain lion crossing through my yard this morning. Bright clear sunny morning. Saw her plain as day. Ran to get my camera and she was gone. I did get some photos of her tracks in the snow. She was almost coal black, big thick tail that didn't move as she walked.

About 4 years ago my parents spotted a large tan colored cat with a long tail laying down in a field next to a treeline behind my Grandmother's house in Lincoln, ME. They both observed the large cat through binoculars for several minutes before the animal walked into the woods. It was early spring and some snow still remained on the ground. They walked to the area where the animal had been resting and saw very large paw prints. I am convinced this was a Mountain Lion because the description was a match.

Tuesday, April 10, 2007. I was driving from Lewiston- Northbound, and right after the last Maine Turnpike toll station -and before the Gardiner 295 exit I saw what appeared to be a large female lion - I then realized that it could be a mountain lion. It was on the right side of the road, Northbound, on a dirt road that appeared to have been an unused turnpike exit or entrance. I am hoping someone else saw it too.

Sunday 04/22/07- My Daughter pulled in the yard at 7:20 AM to find two Mountain Lions out back...one bigger one and one a little smaller. Both about hip height, saggy bellies, beige/brown. We have tracks all in the yard, even under our deck. It's a little un-nerving but good to know they are still in existence. They were about 60 feet from the house and they didn't look at her but just sauntered off into the woods, one after the other. They seemed to be passing through and hopefully not visiting the neighboring farm. We saw some tracks in the yard earlier this week but we thought it was an awfully large dog. Then this sighting. The tracks are about 4-5 inches wide and tall.

I was driving in Campton NH last evening around 7 pm. I saw a very large, tan, cat like animal with a long tail. It was crossing the road into the woods and I saw it mid air. I looked up pictures online and it was definetly a mountain lion. I was amazed because I have not heard of them being in this area for a long time. I came across this site in the process of looking for more information. It was a sight to see!

My husband and I saw a 60-70 pound cat in Kennebunkport two nights ago. It was around 6 pm and it was crossing the street in a rural area. We both got a good look at it. It was very healthy, tan and had a long tail. We were in our car and stopped in the middle of the road to look at it. There is no question in our minds, after researching it on the Net, that is was an Eastern Cougar /Moutain lion. Unbelievable!

Driving home from work on 6/12/07 @ approx. 6:45 p.m I was with a friend of mine and all of a sudden this animal ran out in front of us about 50 yards and we both looked at each other and said did you see that, it was a long bodied and tan with a long tail and the only thing I could think of was a female lion, never seen anything like it before. It was short haired and low to the ground, all the years I've been living in Maine never seen anything like that. It was in the town of Turner.

Driving back from work a co-worker and I saw a mountian lion cross route 1 in Jonesboro about 15 years ago. I saw it appear on the right shoulder of the road, and it was across the road in two bounds. The cat must have been jumping a good 20 feet with each jump. When I got to where it crossed I stopped the truck and the cat was no more than 15 yards away standing broad side at the edge of the woods looking at me. I saw the cat open it's mouth and could even see its teeth. The truck window was rolled up so I don't know if it made a noise when it opened its mouth or not.
There simply isn't any doubt as to what the cat was. Sad thing is that I had a camera in the truck, but I was so enthralled with looking at the cat, that the thought of trying to get a photo never crossed my mind. Probably would not have been time anyway as the cat slipped into the woods just moments after I got the truck stopped.

Coming home from about two weeks ago, in Bow around 5:00, a large tan can with a long tail crossed right in front of me, from one set of woods to another. From everything I have looked at on the web, I have to believe it was a mountain lion.

Last Thursday about 10:30 am as my sister, daughter and I were driving on the Bemis Road just about a 1/2 mile from route 17, a large animal walked across the road about 100 yards ahead of us. We all said - what was that?! And each of us thought we had seen a large cat. Glad I found this site because we did believe it was a mountain lion.

I believe I saw a mountain lion on my way home tonight. It was around 8:20pm near the Denmark/Brownfield border on rt 160. I wasn't sure what I saw until we looked around on the web. But I can't find anything else that would resemble a large animal moving like a cat. Anyway, pretty crazy to see something like that right down the road from where I live.

I am a flatlander who moved to maine in high school from a farm in mass. I worked as a lumberjack for 12 years and thought I had seen all of maines wildlife from having pet deer, ferrets and a fisher in woods camp. I have a 1/2 mile driveway that opens to fields 100 yards from my house. In augest of 2004 I saw a pile of brush beside my drive on the edge of the field covering a small deer. Thinking bear or bobcat I grabbed the 30-06 with scope and watched.about 6:30 a cat came to the kill picked up the deer (50-60 lbs.)and walked down the drive to my house. I kept the scope on it till he turned between my house and truck 40 ft. away . that was when I saw the long tail and lowered the rifle. 3 weeks ago my wife yelled from the kitchen look at this cat. All I saw was big and brown running but she said it had a long tail. this all happened in ellsworth.

I saw a mountain lion in August of 1997 in Gardiner, Maine at the Oakland estate. it was a long ways into the woods. I had two German shepherds with me and I noticed that the underbrush where they were were not moving. I called to them and there was not a sound or a movement. Fianlly i heard a loud crack which was the breaking of an overhead branch. I looked up and saw it and there was no mistaking what it was. the dogs finanlly ran out of the wooded area and on the path with me, but the tree was really near the path. We left as fast as i could move

April 2006 in Belvidere, VT.
My husband and I were ending a day of hiking. We were headed down an old dirt road towards our truck at about 4pm..
Suddeny, the hair on the back of my neck went straight up and all I could sense was intense fear. My husband was aways ahead and kept walking as he didn't know what was going on with me. I turned around expecting to see a bear, but saw nothing.
Everything became silent and I was terrified to move for some unkown reason. I slowly started glassing the area behind me where I sensed the feeling and saw a large cat up in a tree sunning itself. It was watching me watching it. It remained very still so I got to look at it for a little less than a minute. It looked about 30 pounds with light spots, dark black eyes, and tannish in color.
I am so disappointed to say that I honestly cannot remember the shape of the ears. Between the fear and the unexpected nature of the sighting it was a lot to take in.
I thought it was a bobcat, but the only problem was it had a long tail and brownish spots. The tail was the only thing moving - kind of a slow twitching movement.
I pulled the binoculars away to adjust my eyes as I could not believe what I was seeing, and when I looked back it was gone. I still felt fearful so started heading towards the truck walking sideways at a faster pace and 100% alert scanning all around me the rest if the way. My husband finally looked back to see where I was and I signalled him to be quiet and stay still until I could catch up with him. He thought I saw a moose and was wondering why I was walking so weird and acting so scared.
My husband is from the school of "there's no cougars in VT" until he personally sees evidence himself, but he supports my account and knew my fear was not imagined. Family and friends have been bustng my chops nonstop, but I know what I saw. I plan to hike the area this winter to look for tracks, etc.
Either it was a cougar cub (probably not alone)or a very freaky bobcat with a long tail and light brown spots. It was way too big and too far out in the middle of nowhere to be a domestic cat.
I used to wonder why people would see things and not try to look for prints, etc. until now. I was not feeling brave enough to go wandering around without a gun.
The warden said there were a few similar reports, but without pics, scat or prints there's nothing to document. At least he didn't laugh at me!
I wonder if any locals or hunters have had any similar experiences in that area???

About 2 yrs ago, before my husband and I had our house built, we took a ride up to look at our land. We live on the top of a ridge with a bog and woods behind us in Jonesport, ME. We were driving up our road and at the top of the hill, a young mountain lion crossed the road and went into the woods. I barely saw it. A couple months later my father-in-law saw it crossing as he was driving up the road. He said it was about the same size as our chocolate lab (about 90 lbs). Then, one night my husband and I were sitting in our basement watching tv. I thought I heard roar. Like something you would hear on the discovery channel. Not like a lion, but like a panther or cougar. I thought I was going crazy, but we turned the tv down and listened. About a minute later, I heard it again. But this time my husband heard it too. It was much louder, like it was right on the other side of the wall. It was the freakiest thing I've ever heard! Neither of us dared to get up to look out the window and the hair on our necks was standing straight up! I don't think our dogs dared to move either! Then we heard something in the back of my husband's truck, which was parked right outside the garage door, next to where we were sitting. The next day, the trash that was in the back of the truck had been torn up. People can say what they want, but I know what I heard that night and I will never forget it! I still worry about letting my dogs out and I haven't dared to walk them down our road since. I have nightmares about getting attacked. We don't have kids yet, but I don't know if I'll dare to let them outside!

Have yet to see a mountain lion, but did have a lynx cross in front of me in Candia, NH in 1992. I had to nearly stop the car from hitting the cat, as it seemed to almost stop and stare at my headlights...then it trotted off at a good clip, into the woods.
Scary lil' monster with ragged, raised fur at it's rear(scared?), and white spots... and for what it's worth, this is another big cat they say "does not exist" in much of New England.
Route 43, just before the Deerfield border.
