The new plan
Just in case you've missed the PR barrage on TV, you can check out the details of the new and improved Plum Creek plan online.
It outlines the conservation, economic development, recreation and public access components, as well as how the plan has evolved through input from a host of outside sources, and answers some FAQs.
I haven't gone through the whole thing yet. But I'm printing off a copy now to place in the john at home, where I can read it in a more comtemplative and relaxed state.
I'll get back to you with my comments soon.
If you have any for me on this in the meantime, feel free to post them here.
I don't like everything I've read. It's a tremendous number of lots and that will truly alter the wild character of the region. Hopefully LURC will see through all of the PR.
Here's an interesting article on Plum Creek and Maine - written from the perspective of someone who saw Montana get decimated. It speaks volumes.

The Montana article can be found at http://tinyurl.com/lbzbv and is quite an interesting read.

I've gotta agree with Jay. Why the big PR campaign? If this was a good deal, then they wouldn't need all the spin.
I'll wait until they submit their plan to LURC before drawing any conclusions, but it sounds like not much has changed.

I have read what Plum Creek has on their web site. There is a lot to read, but very little information about their new application. This is obviously just a PR stage, giving out vague information that has nice sounding words, but no substance to base an opinion on. Most of the conservation MAY happen, IF they get their rezoning and the conservation groups can PAY the asking price. But the conservation isn't part of the application so it isn't reviewable or enforceable by LURC, so their are no guaranties. None of the other landowners who have sold conservation easements have attached any strings for development.
Plum Creek was supposed to be at a USM forum tonight about their plans (Jewett Hall, 7-9PM), but apparentlly aren't going to show up (although the show will still go on) because they don't want to have any public discussions about their plan right now. Not sure why they say they don't want to discuss it in public when they have a press conference every week and TV and newspaper ads every where you turn.
