Tax Me. more, please

I want to believe that Mainers going to the polls the other day didn't have higher taxes in mind when they cast their ballots.

But that's very likely to be the result.

I mean, come on, there's a pretty clear track record that doesn't take a rocket scientist to properly analyse.

Did anyone bother to ask themselves why Maine's economy is perennially moribund? Why our state took an economic nosedive along with Louisiana last year, excepting the small fact that we didn't suffer a hurricane?

I don't get it.

But we sure did.

The likeable but ineffective fellow with the splotch of spaghetti sauce on his sleeve in the Blaine House gets to stay for another four years.

That's what a meager 38% decided anyway. Governor by default.

And the other fun and games people at the State House get to keep their keys to the tax-and-spend closet, as well as hand out a few more sets to their like-minded pals.

Oh, and that awful TABOR thing? Bah! Why mess up a good thing, right?

Big changes in Maine?

Not a chance.

Can you say "status quo"? I knew you could.

So what does this all have to do with us outdoorsfolks here at the Trailhead?

Nothing maybe. Or everything.

Besides the fact that it remains difficult for too, too many hard working people (uh, that would be you and me) to make a living in this state? And to keep hold of a smidgen of what they earn? So that they and their families might maybe enjoy some leisure time, quite possibly in the outdoors?

Nah, what does that trivial crap matter.

So bring it on, Augusta. And please make it hurt.

Here's a few ways to do it (new legislators please take note):

* Gimme higher fishing and hunting license fees (hint: "fees" is a code word for "taxes").
* Higher snowmobile and boat registration fees.
* Make me pay more for my guide licenses.
* Up the gas tax so it costs more to get to the mountains on the weekend.
* Hike the state park entrance and camping fees.
* Enact the canoe and kayak tax that you kicked around last year.
* Hell, put a tax on hiking boots like I asked.
* Increase the meals and lodging tax.
* Tax me on my taxes
* Take my wallet and beat me senseless

Blah, blah, blah, ad nausem...

Excuse me a minute, my doctor just called and has recommended a stiff increase in my medication. But I've politely declined. Instead I'm just going to go for a hike. The news can't reach me in the woods.

And you all? Well, enjoy your day!

For those that voted and are happy with the outcome you can pay my taxes too!

Carey mentions fees...case in point: did you know Maine has the 8th highest fees in the nation to form an LLC? We are spinning off a part of our company and were deciding on where to establish it...Maine or Virginia (I live in Maine, my partner lives in VA). Fees and taxes makes this choice a no-brainer. With the current tax and fee structure in Maine, you'd be nuts to establish a business in Maine if you have other options.

There's nothing that stifles the motivation to work and to get ahead more than taxes. Maybe the state government wants the rest of us to act like them.

Gutless mainers at the polls. I know I tried my best to fire some of these "less than thrifty" politicians.... Grab onto your wallets.....

I couldn't have said it better! Governor Baldacci, I hope the fact that 62% of Maine voters did NOT want you re-elected hasn’t gone unnoticed! It is time to make some changes!

Carey stick to the outdoors and hiking, politics just dont seem to be your thing.

why does press herald hiring all of these conservative, pro- frivolous spending type people to do there blogs. First off if they're going to have such abstract poitical view, they need to keep it out of you blog.

Stop Carey, I enjoy all you insight on the outdoors and activity, I absolutely detest your participation in politics.

Yo, Otis, my man.

"...Press Herald hiring all of these conservative, pro-frivolous spending type people to do there blogs"?

First of all, frivolous spending describes liberals, not conservatives. Second, your spell-check would not flag the fact that there is another correct spelling of the word, "there", in this case the possessive pronoun, "their".

I especially enjoyed your assertion that a conservative has "abstract views". Good Lord, Otis, you actually detest a person's participation in politics? You? The hero of diversity, and champion of free speech? I find that particularly revealing and a little bit frightening.

I find Carey's ruminations to be refreshingly candid, a result of being on the trail, keeping company with himself, and having a damned good conversation.

If the State of Maine is going to Tax Drinking Water we may as well find a way to tax the Air that we breath as we hike along a Tollgated "PAYG" Hiking Trail system.. (Pay-as-you-go)

Ugh... this was the one part of the PPH I actually enjoyed. Now thanks to the fact that Kish had to get political, this blog will be over run with the same GOP whackjobs that seem to have taken over the rest of the PPH discussions. Oh well. Guess what everyone... Baldacci won! Get over it.

I agree with Otis... stick to hiking.

The 7% sales tax on restaurants was suppose to tax the tourists. Who eats at these places for the 8 months they all go back to Mass & NY? I guess are suppose to stay locked inside our homes for the summer and wait for those tourists to leave our state!

Did you know everytime the state raises the minumum wage, the state of Maine gets a huge pay raise due to the increased payroll tax money paid for by our local businesses.

I hope Maine is proud to have re-elected "Taxman Baldacci!"

A question for all you libs who think that higher taxes are a good idea.....how much extra money do you voluntarily contribute to the state treasury in Augusta, for them to use according to their wisdom? Or how often do you go down to your Town Hall and drop off some extra cash with the Town Clerk, with a message to "use as you see fit"?

Anyone?

Uh, hello, but issues of taxes and spending, which affect all of us who live and work and play in Maine, are not the sole property of the right or the left. Throw them all out and return us to a short-term citizen's legislature, that's what I say. Hikers and outsdoorspeople alike have opinions. Better that we don't hide them but rather express them, here and eleswhere, open for debate and comment. That's the free and healthy America you want to hope continues to exist.

Hey Trailheaders!
I see my post-election day rant has lit up a few keyboards. Good for a fine back and forth exchange. I like that!
15 miles of awesome hiking on Friday (details to follow...)has greatly lowered my blood pressure and brightened my outlook. So I'm back in my happy place. And rummaging about the house gathering gear for opening day of ski season this coming weekend! Can you believe it? Woo-hoo!
Meet me at the Loaf's Super Quad Saturday morning at 10:30 and take a few apolitical runs with me.
See you there!

Right on Carey.. I heard that Maine Revenue Services would only budge on the Cabela's deal if they agreed to open a methadone clinic next to their fishing department.. Of course I'm kidding, but there is a tragic irony to priorities this state seems to posses under the current leadership. I'm only glad Cabela's saw the beauty of Maine past its current politics.
