What do trails mean to YOU?

What DO trails mean to you? Why are they important to you, to me, to us?

Is it for the solitude, with nothing but a pack of simple goods on your back, a smile on your face and miles of empty trail ahead of you; trees and rocks, sunshine and fresh air, and your own thoughts as company?

Is it for the camaraderie, folks gathered up around the evening campfire, sharing the day and a good meal amid the woodsmoke, frogs chirping and the sun setting in the background, and that fine feeling of friends and fatigue settling into your being?

Is it that incredible feeling of challenge and then sense of self-discovery, when you reach the top of the mountain after a hard climb, or paddle around the dicey headland amid the heaving seas, or finally ride that narrow trick bridge on your mountain bike... yes, I CAN do it!

Is it for the sheer simplicity of making your bed under the stars in a forest meadow, cooking up an extraordinary one-pot feast on your little camp stove, of sitting on a rock overlooking a tumbling brook doing not much of anything but knowing deep how great it is to just sit on a rock overlooking a tumbling brook.

Is it for the wonder of coming around a bend and scaring yourself and a magnificent bull moose, the beauty of the sky--all purple and red and orange--as the sun sets over a glass-surfaced lake, the 360 degree panorama set out before you from the craggy mountaintop, the sweet smell of the balsam forest in a warm patch of sunlight.

Is it for the natural beauty of our state, whether it's the little grove of hardwoods down the street where you walk every day, the Back Cove Trail beneath the urban skyline of downtown Portland, the alpine heights of the Bigelow ridgeline, the placid waters of the Saco River, the bold landscape of the Cutler coast...

I enjoy hiking the Mount Batty Trail in Camden Hills State Park because it is closeby and doesn't require a high level of physical endurance.

Hobbs Pond is my favorite place to paddle because it is small and quiet, and it has a nice little stream inlet full of water lilies and fish!

Anywhere in Maine is my favorite spot to camp because it is something my whole family enjoys doing together and it gives us time to reconnect without all the world's distractions.

The most beautiful mountain to me is Ragged Mountain because I am blessed to drive by it every time I drive to Rockland. It is especially vibrant in the fall when its beautiful foliage it reflected in the ever still Mirror Lake.

Running or walking on the snowmobile path across from my house is great because we can go any time, there are always new discoveries to be made, and there's a cute little bridge and picnic area at the end of my walk.

Cross-country skiing at Sunday River is the best because there are a variety of trails for all levels of experience.

I like the Moxie Bald section of the AT for a variety of reasons. The trail begins as a winding and gentle woodland path that changes character to become a boulder-choked obstacle course and finishes up on an open summit with 360 degree views of lakes, woods and mountains. Additionally, I have a personal connection to this trail in that my great uncle cut and maintained this section of the AT. I have hiked this trail for over 35 years in all weather and seasons, with family and friends, and by myself; it has become part of me.

My motivation for hiking this trail has changed over the years. In my youth, the challenge of conquest and the wonder of discovery fueled my desire. As time passed, my enjoyment of the trail evolved; now hiking it is about renewal. It is a rare opportunity to procede at my own pace and stop at my leisure, to pause at a mist-shrouded bog and drink in the earthy fragrance and feel the morning sun on my face. It is a time for remembering all of the other times that I have stood in this spot and breathed it all in and marvelled at the intoxicating perfection of the moment.

Great pics and thoughts! I really can't agree more. (although I prefer the quieter Megunticook over Battie)
Maybe some rhyming though is appropriate like a favorite tune in your head while you hike.

I'll take a trail
and its human scale.
Connect to nature and savor the view
Whether visited before or something new
I enjoy the trails near home
just as I do wherever I roam.

(Okay, it's not great, but I tried.)
