What's in your first aid kit?

I was inspecting my first aid kit the other day. It really needed cleaning out. I had a bunch of bottle of antiseptic and way too many bandages.

The need for a first aid kit may not be obvious. It's hard to imagine what type of injury needs minor care while floating on the water.

But the problem is that my kayaking trips involve stopping at islands. We tend to get out and explore an island and have lunch. That usually involves walking on wet, slippery rocks. You with me now?

Here's what I settled on:

Bottle of Clear Skin: Great for sealing small cuts - especially on hands. Bandages don't last long on my hands because of the paddle and salt water.

Bandages of various sizes: Despite the first item, they come in handy. Don't go overboard.

Latex gloves: Where there's blood, there's a need for protection.

Ace bandage: Sprains and breaks are possible on the islands.

Tweezers: Always an opportunity for splinters.

Pain reliever such as ibuprofen: Whether it's a hangover or over doing your paddling, this can ease a lot of discomfort.

Antihistamine: Ease allergic reactions.

Bandanna: Not only can it be used in bandaging but you can lay it out to provide a clean area to spread your first aid gear.

What else do I need for day trips?

We always carry the small Pepto tablets...you would not want to be caught needing them when you're away from shore with no restrooms. Also, for the ladies, don't forget to bring some feminine products. Again..you never know. Also, a small repair kit for the sunglasses. Those are some more of our essentials

I'm just getting into kayaking and I'm giving my marine environment first aid kit some thought. Among the standard stuff, I plan to have a small bottle of vinegar for jellyfish stings; like a recycled Visine bottle. At the moment, I'm thinking about having the entire kit contained in one of the Micro series Pelican boxes to keep it waterproof and able to float.
