How much for that kayak in the window?
Yeah, I'm lazy. I haven't updated this blog in weeks. I finally developed photos from summer vacation - which aren't on any blog. But I did get around to reading Deirdre Fleming's column on buying a canoe or kayak.
It does stress the mantra "try before you buy." Even if you are new to paddling and don't think you can appreciate the nuances of how a boat handles, at least find out if it is comfortable. Do your feet fit into it?
Which leads me into Maine Island Kayak's Fall Sale. It's going on now through Oct. 14. On Saturday, they have open demos from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The weather is supposed to be extremely nice.
Sure you have to make your way out to Peaks Island and figure out how to get the kayak back. Maybe you can take your paddling gear or buy it there so you can paddle it back. Hold that thought for a minute.
Even if you don't buy a kayak, it will be a nice trip. Walk around the island. Pack a lunch. Enjoy the ferry ride. It won't be a wasted day.
Now, about paddling back. I was sort of kidding. Personally, I wouldn't make the trip alone. But if you are a confident paddler and have your gear with you (or have enough money to buy everything you need on Peaks), it would make for a good story.
